J.M. Barrie’s swashbuckling Captain James Hook of the pirate brig Jolly Roger was the maritime entrepreneur with the most famous prosthetic in literature.  Nemesis of Peter Pan who feared only the crocodile who had swallowed the hand (cut off by Peter), he commanded his crew with a mixture of savagery, dry wit, and impeccable taste in outerwear. Played by Cyril Ritchard in near-drag-queen splendor and Dustin Hoffman with a more sinister edge, Hook’s signature sneer and needle-sharp appendage set a lasting standard for villainy.
